New storm moving across US to bring cold blast to Midwest and Northeast

first_imgABC NewsBy MAX GOLEMBO, ABC News(NEW YORK) — A major weather pattern change is expected in the United States as stormy weather moves from west to east with heavy snow, severe thunderstorms and Arctic cold.A new storm will move into the West Thursday and Friday and will bring much-needed rain to California, where dry winds helped spread another brush fire Wednesday. On Wednesday, winds gusted up to 85 mph in Southern California, helping fuel the fire in Carlsbad, near San Diego. Some evacuations even had to be issued. Firefighters quickly responded, however, and were able to control the blaze.Southern California will see rain and cooler temperatures on Friday as the storm system moves in. There is even a chance of snow in the mountains outside Los Angeles and San Diego. Part of the same storm will move into the Central U.S. over the weekend, bringing heavy snow from the Plains into the Great Lakes. Des Moines, Twin Cities, Green Bay and the west of Chicago will see the heaviest snow.In the South, severe thunderstorms could erupt along the cold front from Texas to Oklahoma, including Dallas-Fort Worth.More than half a foot of snow may fall from the Rockies into the Midwest over the weekend.Ahead of the storm, a blast of Arctic air is expected to spill into the Midwest and the Northeast Friday and into the weekend.Temperatures will dip below zero for parts of the Midwest. In the Northeast, wind chills could dip below zero for northern New York state and into New England. The cold blast will make it all the way to the coast, including the I-95 corridor, with wind chills forecast to be in the teens from Washington, D.C., to Boston Saturday morning.Copyright © 2021, ABC Audio. NEWS SCAN: Anthrax site reopens; raw chicken and Listeria ; plague, hantavirus alert

first_img New Hampshire site of anthrax exposure is reopenedThe Waysmeet Center at the University of New Hampshire has been disinfected and was reopened Apr 16, according to a Foster’s Daily Democrat report. The center is home to United Campus Ministry and the apparent source of spores that caused gastrointestinal anthrax in a woman who attended a drum circle event there last December. “We’re absolutely certain it’s safe to enter,” said Dr. Jodie Dionne-Odom, New Hampshire’s deputy state epidemiologist. The patient recently returned home from the hospital and is “walking around and talking and able to answer questions,” Dionne-Odom said, adding that her long-term prognosis is uncertain. Cleanup professionals scrubbed the entire building between March 22 and April 14, finding Bacillus anthracis spores, which cause anthrax, throughout the building, including on electrical outlets and two animal-hide drumheads. The cleanup cost $50,000, and the spores were ruled to be of natural origin. Officials believe the woman swallowed anthrax spores during a “brief aerosolization” event amid “vigorous drumming,” Dionne-Odom said.Apr 17 Foster’s Daily Democrat story Study: Raw chicken identified as source of Listeria at plantA recent 21-month study by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists at the University of Georgia concluded that incoming raw poultry rather than workers or the environment is the main source of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in commercial cooking plants. The test site was a brand-new cooking facility free of Listeria when first opened. Samples were taken regularly during the study period from potential sources of contamination, including soil and water near the facility, floors in various parts of the plant, incoming air, and raw meat. Listeria was found in floor drains within 4 months of the start of operations. The only tested source that was consistently positive for the organism was the raw meat. Study results can help facilities focus their sanitation efforts to reduce cross-contamination. The study was published in the Journal of Food Protection.Study abstractApr 19 ARS news story Apr 19, 2010center_img Plague, hantavirus alert issued for New MexicoPeople in New Mexico have been warned by state health officials to be on the alert for plague and hantavirus in animals this spring after several confirmed cases of plague were reported in cats and dogs. Plague can spread to pets when they eat infected rodents or are bitten by fleas from the rodents. The disease can then spread to humans through direct contact with infected pets or bites from the pets’ fleas. Humans can contract hantavirus through breathing in aerosolized virus from rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. The main carrier is deer mice. Among preventive steps are avoidance of sick and dead rodents and rabbits as well as their habitats, keeping pets from roaming and hunting and use of flea-control products, trapping mice and keeping them out of homes and cabins, not disturbing rodent nests and droppings without good ventilation, and seeing a vet if pets show fever, lethargy, or loss of appetite. Plague symptoms in humans include fever, chills, headache, weakness, and swelling of lymph nodes; early hantavirus symptoms include fever and muscle aches.Apr 16 release from New Mexico Department of Healthlast_img read more

Russia Drops First Criminal Charges Against Arctic 30 Activist

first_imgRussia has dropped the first criminal charges against Arctic 30 activist Anthony Perrett. As Greenpeace reports, Mr. Perrett has requested an exit visa from the Federal Migration Service to allow him to leave Russia.Anthony is one of the people who were seized when the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise was boarded after a peaceful protest at Gazprom’s drill platform in the Pechora Sea. They need exit visas because they were charged and then bailed inside Russia after they had been detained in international waters beyond Russia’s territorial waters. The Russian Parliament approved an amnesty decree last week freeing defendants who have been charged with hooliganism. It therefore included the Arctic 30 – the 28 Greenpeace International activists and two freelance journalists, who were arrested at Gazprom-operated Arctic oil platform three months ago.December 25, 2013; Image: Greenpeacelast_img read more

The striping template was played out years ago, the number font is okay but the coloring design ruined it & makes it look cheap, “PHL” was an awful idea, & as good as the blue helmet looks, the black helmet just looks bad in comparison. All in all, they hit a home run with that blue helmet. Cian O’Connor and the diminutive mare Quidam’s Cherie also had one fence down, while Dermott Lennon and the Irish Sport Horse Loughview Lou Lou finished the first round on eight penalties. The second round at Rotterdam showed the sophisticated build of the course, with team orders re-arranging rapidly as new fences fell with almost every rider. Ireland was not immune, with Denis Lynch racking up an uncharacteristic 16 faults. Cameron Hanley repeated his five fault score from the first round, and Cian O’Connor also came home on four faults once more. Lennon improved on his first round performance with just one fence on the floor, but the accumulated penalties left the Irish on 26 faults, one point above eighth-placed USA.Afterwards team manager Robert Splaine said: “We anticipated that Rotterdam was going to be one of the toughest competitions in the series, but we wanted to come here and test ourselves against the best in the world, so that we could be aware of our strengths and weaknesses in what is a very important year for us.“In this competition our best score should have been our worst, and if we can take something positive out of it as we move forward it is that we certainly found our weaknesses today.”Ireland’s next points-scoring Furusiyya Nations’ Cup will be at Hickstead in England at the beginning of August, followed by the Aga Khan Trophy at the Dublin Horse Show a week later.Ireland finished third in the world series last year in the final at Barcelona.Irish team scores at Rotterdam were:Denis Lynch/Coulisa 4/16Cameron Hanley/Antello Z 5/5Cian O’Connor/Quidam’s Cherie 4/4Dermott Lennon/Loughview Lou Lou (ISH) 8/4TOTAL 26.Cian O’Connor and Quidam’s Cherie, who had Ireland’s best score with one fence down in each round at Rotterdam. We Will Beat Etoile On Sunday – Jos Fans Boast (Audio)

first_imgWriter: Segun OdunayoRelated In six days time, the new Jos stadium will host the most important game to be played in it since it came into existence. Plateau United will come up against Tunisian giants, Etoile Du Sahel in the reverse fixture of a CAF champions league double header which will decide the team that will make it to the money spinning group stage of the competition while the other side will crash into the second tier of CAF’s football competition – The CAF confederations cup. The Sousse side has the advantage after a 4-2 victory at home but a 2-0, 3-1 or 4-1 loss to Plateau United in Jos will dash any hopes of getting to the group stages. With this in mind, Plateau United fans who spoke with www.busybuddies.ng were assured their team would live up to expectation by doing all that is needed to qualify.  After seeing the club he has supported for the past 19 years of his life make it to the champions league for the first time, Stephen Samuel who was wearing his Plateau United replica jersey and even had a well fitted cap still with the name of his most loved club on it was convinced the team won’t disappoint himself and other fans on Sunday. “Plateau United is the best team in the whole world, I believe in the team and I know they have the zeal and capacity to beat Etoile du sahel 2-0”, he said. With a huge smile on his face he went one step further by predicting the player that will score the goals which will break the hearts of the Tunisians. “Our star man Tosin will score the goals”, he stated. Despite predicting a victory and even picking the name of the player he thinks will do damage to the visiting side’s defence, Samuel went on to declare that his team won’t concede a goal.  “I promise you we won’t concede, we have not lost a single game at home this season neither have we conceded a goal too. I, my family and all my friends will surely be in the stadium on Sunday”, he concluded.Another fan, Raymond Wummen who has been a lover of Plateau United for 15 years feels the Jos based club is better than their Tunisian opposition and victory is assured on Sunday. “We scored two goals against them last week, that’s no easy thing to do, we will definitely win the coming fixture here in Jos to qualify to the group stages”, he declared. Wummen was of the opinion that any player fielded by Coach Kennedy Boboye could get the goals for Plateau United. “Anybody can get the goals for us, we have seen this a lot this season, I am assured they will win”, he said. Both sides will be going into the crucial encounter on the back of 1-0 defeats in their domestic league matches last weekend. While Etoile lost to Club Africain at home despite the away side getting a red card, Plateau United lost to Niger Tornadoes in Minna. They both conceded penalties in those games.  Although, Coach Kennedy Boboye rested influential players Raphael Ayagwa and Salomon Junior were both rested for the upcoming CAF champions league encounter.A sports analyst/presenter with local radio station, Jayfm 101.9, Deji Ogeyinbo towed the line with Plateau United fans by saying he expected the team to win but he was unsure of their qualification. “Honestly speaking, I’m confident of a win but not of them qualifying ”, he said. However, he felt an extra man in the middle to frustrate Etoile du sahel and a very sharp Tosin Omoyele could help the team make the group stages. “Aside Jimmy Ambrose and Raphael Ayagwa, an extra man should be brought into the midfield to frustrate the Tunisians and Solomon Junior should keep a calm head while Tosin Omoyele should come to the pitch with his scoring boots” , he stated. In another development, reports have it that  Etoile du sahel have asked CAF to ban the New Jos stadium tagging it unfit to host an international game. Last week, officials of CAF came to Jos to inspect the stadium and check the hotels the visiting team was going to lodge. At the moment, reports say NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and other top individuals of the Nigerian football body are working hard to ensure Plateau United play on their home ground in front of their numerous supporters.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AUD-20180313-WA0006.m4a00:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AUD-20180313-WA0005.m4a00:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/AUD-20180313-WA0004.m4a00:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.last_img read more

Tampa Bay Rays fire team doctor after YouTube video alleges sexual abuse

first_img Related iStock/Thinkstock(TAMPA BAY, Fla.) — The Tampa Bay Rays fired its team physician after a woman alleged in a YouTube video that he sexually harassed and abused her when she was a teenager, team officials said Wednesday.Dr. Michael Reilly was dismissed by the team and reported to the police after the YouTube video was uploaded on Jan. 17 by a 26-year-old woman named Brianna Rah, who claimed the doctor sexually abused her and barraged her with unwanted sexual advances when she was 16 years old and worked in his office.“We have very recently become aware of the video accusing Dr. Reilly of sexually abusing a former employee of his medical practice. We have ended our contractual relationship with him, and we have alerted the St. Petersburg Police Department and Major League Baseball of this situation,” John Higgins, general counsel and senior vice president of administration, said in a statement to ABC News. The St. Petersburg Police Department said it is investigating the allegations made in the video.“It’s our duty to review allegations like this,” Sandra Bentil, a spokeswoman for the police department, told ABC News. “We’re just in the fact-finding stages right now.”Reilly, 67, did not return a request for comment from ABC News on Wednesday. A woman who answered the phone at his office in St. Petersburg said he was busy seeing patients. In a statement to ABC station WFTS-TV in Tampa Bay, Reilly said, “I deny allegations of sexual abuse.”“We did, however, have a consensual relationship when she was an adult, which I regret,” he said in the statement. “I’ve dedicated my life to medicine and making our community a better place to live, so having my reputation tarnished in this manner is disturbing.”He added: “The video has already had serious repercussions for me and my family. As a result, I am consulting with legal counsel, and I am not in a position to say anything further at this time.”In the video — titled “The Importance of Sharing My Story of Sexual Abuse” — the woman alleges that Reilly inappropriately touched her and tried to kiss her when she was working for him at his St. Petersburg practice as a teenager. According to the video, the woman’s name is Brianna Rah, but the Tampa Bay Times reported that that is not her real name.“I’m not looking for anyone to feel bad [for me] because so many people go through this all the time. I’m doing this because this person is still active in the community…,” the woman says in the 10-minute video, which as of Wednesday evening had been viewed more than 12,500 times. The woman says she originally met Reilly at church, and babysat his six children when she was a teenager. The alleged abuse — which she claims lasted three years — started when she later began working at his private practice, where he would touch her inappropriately.“There were times in the office when he would ask for me during hours to come into his office. He would shut the door and try to kiss me,” she says in the video. “What do you say when you have four other people working there and you have to listen to the person that you work for, and on top of that at that age?”She says she quit, but started working there again eight months later because she thought she might be overreacting.“He would always counteract [the abuse] with ‘don’t forget to go to mass,’ or ‘practice, practice, practice tennis,’ ‘get good grades,’” says the woman. She says she was conflicted about reporting the abuse because Reilly acted like a father figure to her while simultaneously mistreating her.Reilly had been the Tampa Bay Rays team physician since the franchise was founded in 1998.WFTS-TV reported that none of the players or Rays staff had complained about Reilly previously.Reilly is also an independent member of the medical staff at St. Anthony Hospital in St. Petersburg.“We are concerned about the nature of the allegations and are empathetic towards any victims of sexual abuse. We will determine next steps as more information becomes available,” St. Anthony’s Hospital said in a statement.Beth Hardy, a spokeswoman for the hospital, told ABC News on Wednesday that Reilly’s status with the hospital “has not changed as of right now.”Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio.
